There were some good records last weekend, while I was away on a family long weekend to Edinburgh. On Friday a Cattle Egret, a scarce bird for the Reserve, circled No.3 bed while 18 Whooper Swans dropped onto No.4 bed. Its been a good autumn so far for the latter, with several sightings already. Saturday then saw two Great White Egrets arrive on No.3 bed. Things have been pretty steady since then, with a Woodcock on No.1 bed on Thursday and some visible passage over No.4 bed on the same day, which included: 2 Siskins, 2,000 Woodpigeons, 500 Pink-footed Geese and a few Redwings and Fieldfares. This morning was chilly in the easterly wind at dawn and apart from a Brambling and a Water Rail from the Morgan Hide, the main entertainment came from watching the resident male Marsh Harrier spend most of the morning trying unsuccessfully to catch a Teal for breakfast.
