30-May-2012 4 broods of Black-necked Grebe on No3 bed with a 5th due to hatch.Total of 16 adults.Also 2 broods of Pochard,2 of Gadwall and 2 of Mallard.A family party of G.S Woodpeckers on feeders by Morgan hide. Brianm

The first Black-necked Grebe brood of the year was seen today from the Frank Linley Hide. An adult was feeding young on the back of a second adult in front of the reeds to the right of the hide. The young were too small to be seen. Also present were 2 Gadwall broods whilst on the canal track were a small number of Common Blue butterflies. The Mute Swans at the locks have at least one young whilst the brood of nine from the fish refuge is now down to four.

Todays highlights included: 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 3 Oystercatchers, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 3 Garden Warblers and 2 Kingfishers. Cheers David Bowman

Today’s highlights included a Cuckoo at Bollin Point and a Mute Swan with nine small young at the fish refuge. Wildfowl broods included Mallard and possible Gadwall. Several Coot broods seen and Little Grebe with young on Nos. 1 and 3 beds. No.3 bed held 30 Swifts and all three hirundines, together with 18 Black-necked Grebes and 8 Ruddy Duck. Garden Warblers heard on Nos 1 and 2 bed. Before the rain set in for the day I found my first Small Copper of the year on No.2 bed

Peregrines and Kestrels brooding small young at nest sites under Thelwall Viaduct. Cuckoo on No.3 bed early this morning, along with three reeling Grasshopper Warblers, while at the eastern end of the Reserve three Little Ringed Plovers, 4 pairs of Lapwing and another reeling Grasshopper Warbler were good sightings. In the week, (Thursday) our first Lesser Whitethroat was singing on No.1 bed and two Garden Warblers on No.3 bed.
